N butanol is used as a solvent chemical intermediate and industrial processing agent.

This colourless liquid is widely recognised by its strong, characteristic “banana-like” or alcoholic odour and is highly valued in industry as a versatile solvent and chemical intermediate.

    • Appearance: Clear, colourless liquid.
    • Solubility: Only partly soluble in water (approx. 7%), but easily miscible with most organic solvents like ethers and hydrocarbons.
    • Flammability: Highly flammable with a flashpoint around 35°C (95°F).
    • Boiling Point: 117.7°C (243.9°F).
    • Molar Mass: 74.12 g/mol.

Major Applications
  1. Industrial Solvent: It is a primary component in paints, coatings, varnishes, and lacquers because it improves flow and prevents “blushing” (cloudiness) as they dry.
  2. Chemical Intermediate: Used to manufacture other vital chemicals, most notably n-butyl acetate (a common flavouring and solvent) and butyl acrylate (used in polymers).
  3. Biofuel: Often called biobutanol when produced via fermentation, it is considered superior to ethanol because it has a higher energy density, is less corrosive, and can be used in existing gasoline engines without modification.
  4. Consumer Products: Found in various items including cosmetics (shampoos, shaving products), perfumes, and even as an artificial food flavouring for butter, fruit, and rum.
