Rapeseed meal is a protein-rich byproduct of rapeseed oil extraction, widely used as a valuable and sustainable ingredient in animal feed for various livestock, including cattle, pigs, and poultry. It is the second largest plant protein resource globally after soybean meal.
Nutritional Profile
Rapeseed meal (or canola meal, a low anti-nutrient variety) is a high-protein feedstuff, providing essential energy and a balanced amino acid composition, including high levels of methionine and a decent amount of lysine.
Crude Protein: Typically ranges from 34% to 48%, making it an excellent protein supplement.
Amino Acids: Offers a favorable profile that complements other feed ingredients like soybean meal, being particularly rich in sulfur-containing amino acids.
Fiber: It has a relatively high fiber content compared to soybean meal, which is beneficial for ruminants but can limit inclusion rates in monogastric diets.
Minerals & Vitamins: It is a good source of minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, selenium, and iron, and vitamins like niacin, riboflavin, biotin, and choline.
Primary Uses
The main application for rapeseed meal is in animal nutrition due to its high nutritional value.
Ruminants (Cattle and Sheep): It is an excellent and highly palatable protein and energy source for dairy and beef cattle, supporting milk production and growth. Inclusion rates can be as high as 20% in the diet for dairy cows.
Swine (Pigs): Modern “double-low” (low erucic acid, low glucosinolate) varieties are well-tolerated and can be included in diets for piglets, growing pigs, and sows to support lean muscle growth and reproductive performance.
Poultry (Chickens, Turkeys, Ducks): It can be used as a protein source in poultry diets, though high fiber content may limit inclusion levels. It supports growth and egg production, with inclusion generally recommended up to 15-20% for layers and broilers.
Aquaculture (Fish): It is used in the diets of various fish species, providing a cost-effective protein alternative to fish meal.
