Toluene is a widely used industrial solvent and chemical intermediate.

Key Applications
Toluene is one of the most abundantly produced industrial chemicals globally, primarily used for: 
Fuel Additive: It serves as a high-octane booster in gasoline to prevent engine “knocking”.
Industrial Solvent: It dissolves resins, oils, rubber, and adhesives. It is a key ingredient in paints, lacquers, glues, and nail polish.
Chemical Feedstock: It is a precursor for manufacturing other chemicals like benzene, xylenes, and the explosive trinitrotoluene (TNT).
Cleaning Agent: Used as a heavy-duty degreaser for metal parts and tools. 

Properties & Safety
Physical Properties: Boiling point of 110.6°C and melting point of -95°C. It is highly flammable and its vapors are heavier than air.
Health Hazards: Short-term exposure can cause headaches, dizziness, and confusion (a “drunken” feeling). Chronic exposure or intentional abuse (glue sniffing) can lead to permanent neurological damage, hearing loss, and kidney issues.
Toxicity Status: Unlike benzene, toluene is generally not classified as a human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) due to inadequate evidence.
