Diethyl Ether AR
AR grade diethyl ether is supplied for analytical laboratory and research use.
Common Applications
Laboratory Solvent: Ideal for solvent extraction and purification processes because it is immiscible with and less dense than water.
Reaction Medium: Frequently used in Grignard reactions and other organometallic syntheses due to its basicity and aprotic nature.
Engine Starting Fluid: Used in cold climates to help start diesel and petrol engines because of its low flash point (-45°C).
Historical Anesthesia: Formerly used as a general surgical anesthetic, but largely replaced in modern medicine by non-flammable halogenated ethers like sevoflurane.
Critical Safety & Storage
Flammability: Extremely flammable; vapours are heavier than air and can travel long distances to an ignition source.
Peroxide Formation: Forms explosive peroxides over time when exposed to air and light. AR grade is often stabilised with BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene) to inhibit this.
Storage: Must be stored in a cool, dark, well-ventilated area in tightly sealed containers (often amber glass bottles or metal drums).
Health Hazards: Inhalation causes drowsiness, dizziness, and can lead to unconsciousness. Prolonged skin contact causes dryness or cracking.
Sourcing & SDS
You can purchase Diethyl Ether AR through major chemical suppliers like Sigma-Aldrich, Loba Chemie, or Fisher Scientific. Always consult the specific Safety Data Sheet (SDS) provided by the manufacturer before use.
