How Mycotoxin Binders Work
Mycotoxin binders function through several mechanisms to mitigate the effects of toxins:
  • Physical Adsorption: This is the most common mechanism, where the binder’s surface physically binds to the mycotoxin molecule due to properties like surface area, charge, and pore size. The resulting complex is stable and passes harmlessly through the digestive system to be excreted in the faeces.
  • Biotransformation/Degradation: Some advanced products contain specific microorganisms or enzymes that can degrade the mycotoxins into non-toxic or minimally harmful metabolites. This method is particularly effective for certain mycotoxins that are difficult to adsorb.
  • Immune and Nutritional Support: Certain binders incorporate ingredients like antioxidants or prebiotics (e.g., mannan oligosaccharides, beta-glucans) to support liver function, enhance gut integrity, and boost the animal’s overall immune response, helping the animal cope with the secondary effects of mycotoxin exposure.
