Ferrochrome alloys are used in stainless and alloy steel manufacturing.
Ferrochrome (FeCr) is a crucial alloy of chromium and iron, classified by carbon content (High: 4-8%, Medium: 0.5-4%, Low/Micro: <0.5%) for producing stainless steel, engineering steels, and wear-resistant materials. High-carbon (HC) is used for bulk chromium addition, while low-carbon (LC) grades are essential for high-purity, corrosion-resistant steel production. Key Classifications & Characteristics High Carbon Ferro Chrome (HCFeCr) (4% - 8% Carbon): Produced in submerged electric arc furnaces, it is the most common and cheapest form, used heavily in stainless steel, foundries, and to increase hardness and toughness. A variation, "charge chrome," has lower chromium (50-55%) and is derived from specific ores. Medium Carbon Ferro Chrome (MCFeCr) (0.5% - 4% Carbon): Used for specific alloy steels where carbon needs to be limited, but not as stringently as in stainless steel production. Low Carbon Ferro Chrome (LCFeCr) (<0.5% Carbon): Used in the production of stainless steel, especially for low-carbon grades where high carbon levels cause corrosion. Micro/Ultra-Low Carbon Ferro Chrome (<0.06% Carbon): Used when exceptionally low carbon content is required to prevent sensitization in specialized stainless steels. Industrial Applications Stainless Steel: The largest consumer (over 80%) of all types of ferrochrome to provide oxidation resistance. Alloy Steels: Added to improve hardenability, strength, and wear resistance in engineering steels. Foundry: Used in casting for enhancing mechanical properties. Welding Consumables: Used in flux-cored wires and electrode coatings for wear plates.
