Ferric oxide red, also known as iron(III) oxide (Fe₂O₃) or red iron oxide, is an inorganic compound widely used as an inexpensive and durable red pigment in various industries. It occurs naturally as the mineral hematite, the primary source of iron for steel production.

Ferric oxide red is a stable, non-toxic, and heavy red solid that is insoluble in water.

Appearance and Odor: Red solid, odorless.
Physical properties: It has excellent colour strength, high opacity, and good tinting strength.
Stability: It is highly stable under exposure to light, heat, and pH changes, and resistant to weathering and dilute acids. It only dissolves when heated in concentrated acids.
Safety: It is non-toxic and inert, and is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in cosmetics.

Construction materials: Used as a pigment in concrete, cement, and roof tiles.
Paints and coatings: A durable and cost-effective pigment for paints and protective coatings, including rust-preventative industrial applications.
Cosmetics: Approved for use in various cosmetics, including lipsticks, blushes, eyeshadows, and sunscreens, where it provides colour and stability.
Polishing: A very fine powder version, known as “jeweler’s rouge,” is used to put a final, superior polish on metallic jewelry and lenses.
Ceramics and glass: Used in ceramics and stained glass to impart yellow, orange, and red colours.
