Description

Barium chloride dihydrate is used in laboratory analysis chemical manufacturing and industrial testing.

Barium chloride dihydrate is a stable, inorganic compound with the chemical formula

Core Properties
Appearance: Typically found as colourless, rhomboidal crystals or a white crystalline powder.
Physical State: Solid at room temperature with a bitter, salty taste.
Solubility: Highly soluble in water and methanol, but almost insoluble in ethanol and ethyl acetate.
Thermal Stability: It is stable at room temperature but loses one water molecule.

Common Applications
Laboratory Reagent: Used primarily as a test for sulfate ions with which it reacts to form a thick white precipitate of Barium Sulfate.
Industrial Use: Employed in wastewater treatment, the purification of brine for caustic chlorine plants, and the manufacture of pigments and other barium salts.
Materials Science: Used in heat-treating baths, the case hardening of steel, and the production of PVC stabilizers.
Pyrotechnics: Imparts a bright yellow-green colour to flames in fireworks.

Safety and Toxicity
Barium chloride dihydrate is highly toxic if swallowed or inhaled.
Health Hazards: Ingestion can cause severe electrolyte imbalances (notably hypokalaemia), leading to muscle weakness, cardiac disturbances, and respiratory failure.
Protective Measures: Always use in well-ventilated areas and wear appropriate PPE, including Safety Spectacles and protective gloves.
Storage: Should be stored in a cool, dry place and locked up to prevent accidental ingestion.
