Zinc Scrap
Category: Scrap Materials
Description
Zinc scrap is used in recycling galvanizing and alloy production. As a crucial, sustainable alternative to virgin metal, it is widely recycled to produce brass, alloys, and oxide. It is typically classified as new (industrial) or old (post-consumer) scrap.
Key Aspects of Zinc Scrap:
- Types & Sources:
- New Zinc Scrap: Clean scrap from manufacturing, such as die-cast auto parts, appliances, and hardware.
- Old Zinc Scrap: End-of-life materials like old roofing, gutters, and sheets.
- Galvanized Steel Scrap: Steel coated with zinc for corrosion protection.
- Zinc Dross/Ash: Byproducts from galvanizing plants, often used to make chemicals or zinc powder.
- Identification: Zinc is heavy (similar to lead) but not as soft, and appears as a dull, dark gray metal. It is brittle and typically does not stick to a magnet.
- Recycling & Value: Zinc has significant scrap value, with about 90% of recyclable zinc being processed. It is often recycled into brass or new die-cast alloys.
- Market Trends: Major exporters include France, Germany, and the Netherlands, while key importers include India and Italy.
