Sunflower Meal
Sunflower meal is used in animal nutrition as a protein and fiber source.
Sunflower meal is a valuable, protein-rich by-product of sunflower oil production primarily used as a livestock and poultry feed supplement. Its nutritional profile varies depending on how the oil was extracted and whether the seeds were dehulled.
Uses and Applications
Sunflower meal’s primary use is as a protein supplement in animal feed, especially for ruminants, due to its high fiber content and good amino acid profile (high in methionine, lower in lysine).
Ruminants (Cattle, Sheep, Goats): It is a highly effective and palatable protein source for dairy and beef cattle, often replacing soybean or cottonseed meal without affecting milk yield or weight gain when the diet is balanced. Its high fiber content is well digested by ruminants.
Non-Ruminants (Pigs, Poultry): Use in swine and poultry diets is typically more limited due to its high fiber and lower lysine content. However, dehulled, high-protein meals can be included in higher proportions, especially if supplemented with crystalline lysine and other amino acids.
Fish Feed: It is also used as a source of vegetable protein in fish farm feed.
Potential Human Consumption: Research is ongoing to develop processing methods to remove phenolic compounds, which currently limit its use in human food products.
