Common Applications
Cleaning & Detergents: Used as a “builder” in laundry and dishwasher detergents to soften water, emulsify grease, and prevent dirt from redepositing on surfaces.
Construction: Serves as a binding agent in cements, a concrete set accelerator, and a sealant for masonry to reduce porosity.
Industrial Processes:
Automotive: Used in engine decommissioning and as a sealant for cooling systems or exhausts.
Pulp & Paper: Acts as a deinking agent for recycled paper and stabilises hydrogen peroxide during bleaching.
Water Treatment: Functions as a coagulant to help remove heavy metals and impurities.
Specialty Uses: Employed as a fireproofing agent, an adhesive (soluble glass), and a traditional egg preservative to seal shells and extend shelf life.
Safety & Handling
Hazards: It is corrosive and can cause severe skin burns, eye damage, and respiratory irritation if inhaled.
Storage: Should be kept in a cool, dry place because it is hygroscopic (absorbs moisture from the air).
Incompatibility: Reacts violently with acids and can produce flammable hydrogen gas when in contact with metals like aluminium, zinc, or tin.
