Description

Ammonium chloride AR is used in laboratory analysis pharmaceutical research and chemical testing.

Key Laboratory Applications

  • Cooling Baths: Dissolving it in water is an endothermic process, which creates low temperatures for temperature-sensitive experiments.
  • Analytical Chemistry: Used as a standard reagent for gravimetric analysis and in the preparation of buffer solutions to maintain stable pH.
  • Biological Prep: Specifically used for cell lysis to break down red blood cells in biological samples.
  • Reaction Quenching: Acts as a mild proton source to quench Grignard reactions without the risk of over-acidification.

Safety & Storage

  • Hazards: Harmful if swallowed and causes serious eye irritation (GHS: H302, H319).
  • Handling: Use in well-ventilated areas. In a fire, it releases toxic fumes including Nitrogen Oxides and Hydrogen Chloride.
  • Storage: Keep in a cool, dry place in tightly closed containers; it has a shelf life of approximately 24 to 60 months.

Note: AR grade is not for food or medicinal use; these applications require Food Grade (FG) or Pharmaceutical Grade (USP) certifications.
