Preparing PC Scrap for Disposal/Sale
Before doing anything with your old PC parts, it is essential to take data security and physical safety precautions.
Back up and Erase Data: Back up any important files to external storage or the cloud. Then, use specialized software to securely wipe all data from your hard drive; simply deleting files or factory resetting is not enough to prevent sophisticated data recovery. Many people also remove the hard drive and destroy it physically (e.g., drilling holes through it) for absolute peace of mind.
Dismantle and Sort: Unplug and disassemble the computer to separate components like the motherboard, RAM, CPU, power supply, and cables. Group these items by material (ferrous metals, non-ferrous metals, plastics, circuit boards) as different materials have different recycling processes and values.
Remove Batteries: Batteries require special handling as they can cause fires or leak toxic chemicals if mixed with general waste. Remove them and drop them off at designated battery recycling points, often found at supermarkets or special depots.
Handle Broken Parts Safely: Wear gloves when handling broken components, especially those with glass surfaces, to avoid injury and prevent hazardous materials from leaking.
