N heptane is supplied as a solvent and reference fuel in laboratory and industrial applications.

Common Uses
  • Fuel Standard: Used in “anti-knock” test engines to define the octane rating (n-heptane = 0; iso-octane = 100).
  • Laboratory Solvent: Primarily used in high-precision analytical work and liquid chromatography (HPLC) because its straight-chain structure provides consistent results.
  • Industrial Applications: Found in rubber cements, paints, coatings, and adhesives. It is often preferred over n-hexane in some processes as a slightly less toxic “greener” alternative.
  • Botanical Extraction: Used to extract non-polar analytes from plant materials, such as CBD or bioactive compounds from bark.
Safety & Hazards
  • Highly Flammable: Vapours can travel long distances along the ground to an ignition source and cause a flashback.
  • Health Risks: Acute exposure via inhalation causes dizziness, headaches, and nausea. Prolonged skin contact can lead to dermatitis due to its “defatting” effect on the skin.
  • Environmental Impact: It is very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects. Spills should be contained using activated charcoal or sand and never washed into sewers.
