Ammonium nitrate is used as a nitrogen fertilizer for agricultural applications.

Ammonium nitrate (AN) is a widely used high-nitrogen fertilizer with an NPK rating of 34-0-0. It is a white crystalline solid or granular/prilled product that provides nitrogen in both immediate (nitrate) and slow-release (ammonium) forms. 

Key Characteristics
Ammonium Nitrate is effective for a wide range of crops and is particularly popular for pasture and hay fertilisation due to lower nitrogen loss compared to urea-based fertilisers in warm weather. 
Nitrogen Content: Typically contains between 30% and 34.5% total nitrogen.
Dual Nitrogen Forms: Contains equal amounts of nitrate nitrogen (immediately available to plants) and ammonium nitrogen (gradually converted to nitrate by soil microorganisms).
Physical Form: Usually sold as high-density granules or prills, often coated with anti-caking agents to improve handling and storage.
Solubility: Fully water-soluble.
pH Effect: Prolonged use may have a slight acidifying effect on the soil, which can be managed with periodic calcification.
