Barite powder is a dense, chemically inert mineral powder (specific gravity ~4.5 g/cm³) used primarily as a weighting agent in oil and gas drilling fluids to control downhole pressure. It is also widely used as a filler in paints, plastics, and rubber due to its durability, low abrasion, and high brightness. 
Key Properties and Characteristics 
Density: High specific gravity, typically between 4.1 and 4.6, essential for weighting drilling muds.
Physical State: White or off-white, odorless, insoluble powder (fine particle size).
Hardness: Relatively soft, with a Mohs hardness of 3.0–3.5.
Chemical Properties: Inert, resistant to acids/alkalis, and non-toxic. 

Primary Applications 
Drilling Fluids (84% of use): Functions as a weighting agent to increase the density of drilling muds, preventing blowouts and managing pressure.
Industrial Filler: Used in paints, coatings, plastics, and rubber to improve density, gloss, and strength.
Radiation Shielding: Utilized in high-density concrete for X-ray rooms and nuclear reactors.
Medical: High-purity barium sulfate is used as a contrast agent (barium meal) in diagnostic imaging. 

Production and Sourcing
Barite is mined and then processed by grinding, washing, and purifying. Major producers include China, India, Russia, and the United States. It is typically available in 100-lbm (45.4-kg) sacks or bulk bags.
