Timothy Hay
Category: Animal Feed and Raw Materials
Description
Timothy hay is a premium, high-fiber, cool-season bunchgrass hay widely used as a staple forage for horses and, to a lesser extent, in dairy/beef cattle, sheep, and small animal diets. It is highly valued for its moderate energy, low protein, and low sugar content, making it ideal for animals requiring maintenance-level nutrition, easy keepers, or those prone to metabolic disorders.
Key Nutritional and Physical Characteristics
- High Fiber & Low Protein: Contains high levels of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF), which promote healthy gut motility and digestion while preventing excessive weight gain.
- Palatability: It has a soft, palatable texture and a sweet aroma, which encourages high voluntary intake.
- Digestibility: Generally considered one of the most digestible grass hays, it is safe for colicky or protein-sensitive animals.
- Low Sugar/Starch: Naturally low in non-structural carbohydrates, making it suitable for horses with insulin resistance or Equine Metabolic Syndrome.
- Low DCAD: It has a lower Dietary Cation-Anion Difference (DCAD) than other grasses, which can help prevent milk fever in dry cows.
Uses in Animal Feed Programs
- Equine (Horses): Widely regarded as a “gold standard” for horses. It provides necessary long-stem fiber for chewing (which buffers stomach acid), reducing the risk of ulcers and colic. It is suitable for horses in light-to-moderate work.
- Dairy/Beef Cattle: Used as a base forage in mixed rations to support rumen health and to reduce potassium concentrations in the diet. It is sometimes used for high-end beef cattle (e.g., Wagyu) to aid in meat marbling.
- Small Ruminants & Others: Commonly fed to sheep, goats, and camels, providing consistent fiber.
- Small Pets: A primary, recommended daily hay for rabbits, chinchillas, and guinea pigs to support dental health.
Forms and Quality
Timothy hay is available as long-stem baled hay, haylage, and processed forms like cubes and pellets, which retain similar nutritional values. Quality is highly dependent on harvest timing:
Timothy hay is available as long-stem baled hay, haylage, and processed forms like cubes and pellets, which retain similar nutritional values. Quality is highly dependent on harvest timing:
- Early-cut: Higher in protein and energy, better for growing or high-performance animals.
- Late-cut: More mature, higher in fiber, and better suited for maintenance or “easy keepers” (animals that gain weight easily).
It is frequently blended with legumes like alfalfa to increase protein for livestock with higher nutritional needs.
