Gallium (Ga) is a post-transition metal (Atomic Number 31) that is famous for its extremely low melting point, allowing it to liquefy in your hand.
Key Physical & Chemical Properties
Melting Point: Roughly 29.76°C (85.57°F). It is solid at standard room temperature but melts easily with body heat.
Expands on Freezing: Like water, gallium expands when it solidifies, which can cause glass containers to crack if stored as a liquid and allowed to freeze.
High Boiling Point: It has one of the largest liquid ranges of any element, remaining liquid until roughly 2229°C (4044°F).
Wetting Property: Liquid gallium “wets” (sticks to and coats) surfaces like glass and skin, often leaving a silvery-grey stain.
Non-toxic: Elemental gallium is considered safe to handle, though it is not edible and its compounds can be hazardous.
